AVID Elementary

In 2014, Paramount Unified School District adopted the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) system in an effort to help prepare our students for college and beyond. Currently, AVID is being applied across the district throughout our various elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools, alike. With the adoption of the AVID system, we aim to apply best practices across content areas and support students' critical thinking through writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading (WICOR).

Vision: All students will have access to a path to success.

Mission: AVID Elementary is a foundational component of the AVID College Readiness System and supports the AVID center’s mission to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. It is a methodology that promotes “best teaching” practices to develop consistency in thinking, processing, and delivering information by both students and teachers.  This is accomplished through the implementation of AVID Elementary’s framework for WICOR (Writing to learn, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, Reading to learn) Lessons, Organizational Skills, Student Success Skills, & Partnerships.  The Program’s cultivation of student’s self-motivation, helps them expand their personal visions of academic success and achievement. These instructional components support, reinforce and create a learning community that promotes a safe place to attempt, fail and persevere.

The mission of AVID Elementary is to ensure all students will:
  • Demonstrate Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading skills (WICOR);
  • Utilize organization skills;
  • Develop student success; and
  • Successfully make the transition to middle school.
