Thinking Math Classroom Grades 6-8
A Thinking Math Classroom is an inquiry-based, student-centered approach to teaching mathematics. In a Thinking Classroom, teachers use research-based pedagogies to shift the responsibility for thinking to the students, thereby creating a math classroom culture where students:
• work on rich, real-world problems and tasks
• collaborate to construct knowledge while problem solving
• engage in mathematical discussions where students question, share their reasoning, and learn from each other’s thinking
• contemplate multiple ways of thinking and solutions
