Dual Language Immersion 

Paramount Unified is excited to offer Dual Language Immersion in Spanish in both Kindergarten and 1st grade.

 

Dual Language Immersion is a form of education in which students develop literacy in two languages.

Application Process 

  1. Enroll your student in Paramount USD in ParentVUE starting January 15th
  2. Attend a District-sponsored parent informational meeting and/or a dual language site visit
  3. Work with Educational Services to schedule a language assessment, if applicable
  4. Accept the commitment to participate in the program

Benefits of the Dual Language Immersion Program 

Current research shows that learning a second language can benefit students in the following ways:  

  • Bilingualism and biliteracy 
  • Academic achievement 
  • Cultural competency 
  • Acceleration of academic success  
  • Enhancement of communication skills 
  • Attainment of future personal benefits such as enhanced career, business, and travel opportunities 

  

  Program Model 

Students will participate in a 90:10 program model. Beginning in Kindergarten, students will initially receive instruction in Spanish for 90% of the day and in English for 10% of the day. The percentage of English increases annually 10% until 50% of the day is taught in Spanish & 50% in English by 4th grade.

Who can enroll in Dual Language Immersion?  

  • Students who begin Kindergarten in August 2025 (turn 5 by September 1, 2025)  
  • Native English speakers, native Spanish speakers or bilingual students  
  • Kindergarten enrollees from all areas of the Paramount Unified School District and surrounding communities.
  • 1st grade students will be accepted based on space and language assessment results.
