Paramount Unified School District began the 2025–26 school year by honoring one of its most valued traditions—elevating and empowering student voice through the service of Student Board Members. At the August Board of Education meeting, the District proudly welcomed Kayla Vargas of Odyssey STEM Academy and Marco Rodriguez of Paramount High School to their new roles as student representatives.
Dr. Joshua Lightle, Superintendent, introduced Kayla and Marco to the Board, spotlighting their outstanding qualifications, experiences, and the important responsibilities they will uphold throughout their term. In a moment that underscored the strong foundation of support behind these student leaders, Board President Anderson recognized the parents of both Kayla and Marco, who attended in celebration of this milestone.
Demonstrating their commitment from the start, Kayla and Marco arrived early to meet with Isela Preciado, Senior Executive Assistant, who provided them with key insights into board procedures and an introduction to parliamentary process—preparation that will serve them well as they participate in District governance.
In their first reports to the Board, Kayla shared highlights from Odyssey STEM Academy, including freshman orientation and schoolwide culture- and community-building events that have set a positive tone for the new school year. Marco spoke about Paramount High School’s successful registration and welcome events, current athletic competitions, and the excitement surrounding senior traditions such as Senior Sunrise.
The Student Board Member program continues to provide a vital bridge between the District’s leadership and its student community, ensuring that student perspectives help shape decisions and priorities. Paramount Unified is proud to continue this tradition, recognizing the unique insight and leadership our student representatives bring to the table.
