Tanner Elementary Recognized as 2025 California Distinguished School

Howard Tanner Elementary School has been named a 2025 California Distinguished School, earning state recognition for "Closing the Achievement Gap" through a commitment to student growth and academic excellence.

In the words of State Superintendent Tony Thurmond, this honor reflects “the hard work of our elementary educators and school staff who help our students discover passions and experiences that will propel them.”

The award, one of California’s highest honors for public schools, acknowledges institutions that have demonstrated “exemplary growth for student groups that have experienced persistent achievement gaps and have also demonstrated strong overall outcomes for all students.”

To be eligible for this distinction, schools must meet rigorous standards across multiple performance indicators. These include “exceptional growth in English language arts (ELA) or math,” along with earning a “blue” or “green” status on the California School Dashboard in areas such as ELA and math achievement, chronic absenteeism, and suspension rates. Additionally, schools must ensure at least 95 percent participation in statewide assessments over a two-year period.

Tanner Elementary’s recognition is a direct reflection of the efforts of its faculty and staff, guided by the steady leadership of Principal McConnell. “Excellent elementary schools play a critical role in the life outcomes of our young people,” Thurmond stated, adding that the award celebrates “the persistence and promise of California’s students, educators, and schools.”

The Tanner community will be honored during a statewide recognition ceremony at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim on May 30, 2025.
