In 2019-2020, PUSD adopted Twig Science. Twig Science is a phenomena-based science and engineering program built for California and the Next Generation Science Standards. The program provides students with standards-based lessons while introducing them to a range of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) careers.
Phenomena are important in science education because they give students tangible, interesting examples of science in the real world. They are also good opportunities for encouraging student inquiry; students can observe a phenomenon and subsequently ask questions and do research to find out more about how it works.
Students get excited about science careers when they understand that scientists are just like them. Historical and contemporary examples of a wide range of STEM professionals from all backgrounds are featured to inspire students, including interviews with real-world scientists who talk in a relatable way about what they do, how they got started, and the tools they use. Throughout the imagery used in Twig Science, representation of different genders, races and disabilities are highlighted.
Twig Science presents a rigorous, challenging curriculum, and offers built-in equitable learning opportunities. This ensures students from all backgrounds can fully participate in scientific practices in both science classrooms and informal settings, maximizing life outcomes and ultimately benefiting us all..
