Student Expectations
As a student at the Alternative Education Center, you understand that:
- This is an optional educational alternative that you have voluntarily selected.
- By entering the District Independent Study you have not waived any rights as a student, and you are entitled to all PUSD services and resources
- If you are a student with an individualized education program (IEP), your IEP must specifically provide for my enrollment in Independent Study.
- You must follow all the discipline code and behavior guidelines of the Paramount Unified School District
- Any violation of these guidelines or failure to meet school/district requirements could result in dismissal from independent study and return to your home school
- Visitation on any other school campus requires permission from that school.
- You understand that lack of transportation to the school site is not an acceptable reason for failing to meet with your teacher to submit completed assignments
You also agree to:
- Be supervised by your independent study teacher and/or other approved resource personnel
- Meet regularly with your assigned teacher. You know that failure to complete all assignments will result in an evaluation to determine if you should remain in this program and may also result in the following:
- A letter of concern to you and your parent, if appropriate
- A specially scheduled appointment
- A special meeting with the teacher and/or counselor
- A meeting with the administrator, including your parent or guardian, if appropriate.
- Increase in the amount of time I must be on campus or in an equivalent supervised situation
- Revocation of any work permit issued until my school work is satisfactorily completed
- Termination of the agreement and your regular classroom program of instruction or other appropriate alternative.
- Obtain transportation to your scheduled meetings
- Complete your assigned work and achieve at least the minimum performance requirements of the course of study. You understand that credit, which is based on master of learning, can only be issued after you have successfully completed an activity and it has been evaluated. A minimum of 60 hours of work equals 5 units of credit.
Parent Expectations
As a parent you understand that the major object of independent study is to provide a voluntary educational alternative for your son or daughter. You agree to the school wide student expectations and understand that:
- Individual course objective are consistent with and evaluated in the same manner that they would be if he or she were enrolled in a traditional school program.
- You are liable for the cost of replacement or repair for willfully damaged or destroyed books and other school property checked out to your son or daughter.
- Unless otherwise indicated, a teacher will meet wit your son or daughter on a regular babsis to direct and measure progress. The time and location of meetings with the teacher will be determined by the teacher in consultation with your son or daughter and you.
- You are expected to encourage him or her to do more than the minimum study requirements.
- You have the right to appeal any decision about your son or daughter’s placement, school program, or transfer according to the district’s procedures.
