Q: "How is Independent Study different from traditional classes?"
A: Students attend the Alternative Education Center by choice. This independent study school helps students to pursue their educational opportunities outside the classroom, yet within the educational requirements of the Paramount Unified School District. The nature of the independent study school gives students the opportunity to personalize their instruction and the freedom to utilize a variety of resources and activities to create an exciting and flexible educational experience. While attending the AEC, students may take courses concurrently at the local junior colleges. Students learn and practice the self discipline necessary for future success.
Q: "How often do I have to attend?"
A: Students come to the AEC a minimum of once a week to work and meet with their teacher. Students receive assignments at that time, and are expected to spend a minimum of 20 hours a week on academic work.
Q: "What do I do when I attend?"
A: During the student’s weekly appointment with his or her teacher, the student is responsible for turning in work that was assigned for the previous week, taking any necessary assessments and then reviewing the work assignment for the next week with their teacher.
Q: "If I'm working independently, how do I get help?"
A: Students are also welcome and encouraged to come in to school at other times throughout the week to get help from their teacher, to receive tutoring in a particular subject, to meet with the counselor or to utilize the computer lab or library. The teachers are also available during regular school hours to help you by phone or e-mail.
Q: "Can I graduate from Independent Study? Is there a graduation ceremony?"
A: Yes! Students who complete the requirements for graduation can graduate from the Alternative Education Center and participate in a joint graduation ceremony with the students at Buena Vista High School.
Q: "What kind of classes can I take?"
A: The Alternative Education Center offers all of the basic classes needed to graduate. Students can also co-enroll at community colleges to take courses in specific subject areas or specialized electives that are not available here.
Q: "How do I enroll in Independent Study?"
A: The first step is to see your counselor and to give them your reasoning for transferring to the AEC (some reasons might include pregnancy, work schedule, a desire to study more in depth, or extended travels). They will guide you through the referral process and will submit your request to the administrators for approval. It must be determined that you are a good candidate (i.e. one who will be able to achieve as well as or better than in the regular classroom) and that there is space at the AEC. If accepted, you will be notified that your request has been approved. Once approved, you will be contacted to set up an appointment with your independent study teacher to sign up for your courses.
Q: "Can I take the CAHSEE in Independent Study?"
A: Yes! The CAHSEE is administered on the same schedule at the Alternative Education Center as it is at the main high school campus.
Q: "Can I get breakfast or lunch at school?"
A: Students have access to school breakfasts and lunches and those who qualify can sign up for free and reduced price meals.
