English as a Second Language
Our Adult ESL program is designed to help students develop communicative competence in listening, speaking, reading, writing and numeracy in a competency-based format. The curriculum is designed to meet the diverse needs of students, ranging from the English of daily living to the language required for entry into vocational and academic programs. The content and instructional strategies of all courses reflect the California ESL Model Standards for Adult Education Programs.

Citizenship
This course is designed for you if you are a foreign born student who wishes to become a U.S. citizen. To prepare for the official citizenship test and interview, you will be taught the principles of American history and government on the national, state, and local levels. No processing of application or paperwork.
Literacy

No prerequisite
This class is for you if you cannot read or write and have limited or no English language skills. You will develop listening comprehension, speaking and basic literacy skills necessary for the beginning level.
Beginning Low
No prerequisite
You will learn English from the beginning! This class will focus on speaking, listening, reading and writing. The class will help you learn the English you need to survive in the English speaking community. Practical lessons will prepare you to use everyday English. The teacher will use a variety of materials to help you learn including textbooks, worksheets, and engaging participation activities.
Beginning High
Prerequisite: Completed Beginning Low or ESL Test Placement
This class will focus on speaking, listening, reading and writing. The class will help you learn the English you need to survive in the English speaking community. Practical lessons will prepare you to use everyday English. The teacher will use a variety of materials to help you learn including textbooks, worksheets, and engaging participation activities.
Intermediate Low
Prerequisite: Completed Beginning High or ESL Test Placement. Up to 10 elective credits per semester can be earned.
You will increase your English-speaking skills, grammar skills, as well as learn to communicate in simple dialogues.
Intermediate High
Prerequisite: Completed Intermediate Low or ESL Test Placement. Up to 10 elective credits per semester can be earned.
You will continue to develop your fluency in English. This course will prepare you to understand and speak everyday English with confidence. You will also begin to develop your academic English skills.
Advanced
Prerequisite: Completed Intermediate High or ESL Test Placement. Up to 10 elective credits per semester can be earned.
You will continue to master competence in listening, reading, writing, speaking and numeracy integrated into academic and career preparation contexts.
Listening and Speaking
No prerequisite
If you want to improve your English speaking and pronunciation skills this class is for you. This class provides instruction in pronunciation basics that build and reinforce listening and speaking for students at all levels.
Multilevel ESL
No prerequisite
In this class, you will focus on conversation, speaking, pronunciation, reading comprehension and vocabulary practice for all skill levels. You will also have the opportunity to use various computer programs and Internet websites to improve your English language skills.
Distance Learning
No prerequisite
Want to improve your English faster while studying at home on your own time? The Distance Learning Program is designed for busy adults who have limited time or cannot attend regular ESL classes. Once a week, students take home a video/DVD lesson (or computer based lesson) with supporting homework, and then return the following week to meet briefly with a teacher to check for understanding.
